A 10 day tour of the Austrian Tyrol taking in spectacular waterfalls, lakes and mountain passes

Mayrhofen and Ziller Valley

In the heart of the Ziller Valley lies Mayrhofen, a popular summer resort with plenty to see and do. The main road  travels from Jenbach at the start of the valley and turns east just after Zell Am Ziller and before Mayrhofen to run along the Pinzgau valley through Mittersill to Zell am See. Therefore there is not a lot of through traffic in Mayrhofen. The villages of Finkenburg and Hintertux, are a few km south west of Mayrhofen.

Innsbruck is the capital city of the federal state of Tyrol in western Austria. It is located in the Inn Valley at the junction with the Wipptal (Sill River), which provides access to the Brenner Pass, some 30 km south of Innsbruck. Located in the broad valley between high mountains, the Nordkette in the north, Patscherkofel  and Serles  in the south. It is an internationally renowned winter sports centre, and hosted the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics as well as the 1984 and 1988 Winter Paralympics. The word bruck comes from the German word Brücke meaning "bridge" which leads to "the bridge over the Inn".

The Krimml Waterfalls, with a total height of 380 metres (1,247 feet), form the highest waterfall in Austria. The falls are formed from the Krimmler Ache river and are located near the village of Krimml in the High Tauern National Park in Salzburgerland. Krimmler Wasserfälle is a tiered waterfall. The waterfall begins at the Krimmler Ache at the top of the Krimmler Achendal, and plunges downward in three stages. The upper stage has a drop of 140 metres, the middle of 100 metres, and the lowest a drop of 140 metres. The highest point of waterfall is 1470 Mt above sea level.

The Achensee Railway is a 6.78 kilometres long metre gauge railway running between Jenbach and Seespitz on Lake Achensee in Tyrol (Austria). Within its length it rises some 440 metres (1,444 ft) in height, with the steeper sections using the Riggenbach rack system. It is Europe's oldest cog railway which is still steam operated. The Achensee Railway has four open and two closed four-wheel coaches.
