Holt

Holt is one of those lovely towns that you can wander around for ages, just enjoying the small hidden yards which are full of little independent shops and cafes, or browsing in the galleries and antique shops. Spend your time eating in one of the many tea rooms, cafes, wine bars or pubs.

It’s a really pretty Georgian town with so many beautiful flint stone buildings, hidden yards and Georgian facades for you to enjoy.

Whenever you read about Holt, you’ll read about The Great Fire. So it has to be mentioned here for one reason; the fire destroyed most of Holt. Why is that significant? Well it was then rebuilt with Georgian architecture and thus has become one of the best loved Georgian towns in Norfolk.

Thursford Christmas Spectacular

In 1977 against the background of steam engines, mechanical organs and fairground rides a small Christmas show took place, with eight choral scholars from Kings College, Cambridge, singing a selection of John Rutter carols. It has now grown into the largest Christmas show in England. The producer and director, John Cushing indulges his own belief in creating a magical Christmas of yesteryear - a time of love, hope and giving. In his opinion, the one element that encapsulates the spirit of Christmas more than any other is music. For John Cushing 'Christmas Eve' is the most magical night of the year and his premonition years and years ago that one day he would be involved in a Christmas show was realised when he took on the job of managing director of Thursford Collection in 1976 and put on his first show in 1977.

Thursford’s Christmas Spectacular has attracted over 5.8 million visitors to date and is the largest Christmas show in the country. It is set in the magical surroundings of mechanical organs and fairground carousels, with a cast of 120 professional singers, dancers and musicians – most of whom are straight out the West End. The three hour performance delivers an extravaganza of non-stop singing, dancing, music, humour and variety. It’s a fast moving celebration of the festive season featuring an eclectic mix of both seasonal and year-round favourites, with famous and much-loved chart toppers being performed alongside traditional carols. Please note the finale of the show includes a fly over of white doves across the auditorium.

Word of this amazing show has spread and it is now generally recognised as being the largest show of its kind in the country, if not Europe.
