A 5 day tour taking in Whitby, Scarborough & the spectacular North Yorkshire Moors

Northallerton

Set in the rich farmland of Herriot Country, you would be forgiven for thinking Northallerton is the perfect place for a sedate country escape. But instead this thriving and bustling market town is full of life and is an ideal base for visitors to explore the nearby moors, historical cities and picturesque villages. Originally on the Great North Road between London and Edinburgh, the Railway arrived in the 1840s strengthening Northallerton's importance as a communication centre. The town has a wide High Street and is a pleasant busy shopping centre with many independent shops, cafes and pubs. There is a busy market on Wednesday and Saturday.

Scarborough

As Britain's original seaside resort, Scarborough offers something for everyone with two beaches, exciting attractions and a rich history. Situated on the North Sea coast, it's 2 bays with golden sandy beaches are split by a headland bearing the 12th-century Scarborough Castle. The Victorian Central Tramway funicular train links the town centre with South Bay and its harbour. The Rotunda Museum explores local coastal geology and Scarborough SEA LIFE Sanctuary’s marine displays together with the Peasholm Park Japanese gardens are behind North Bay.

Whitby

Whitby is a town that offers something a little different to your ‘typical’ coastal resort and will no doubt surprise you when you visit. Famous for its connections to Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Whitby has always embraced its association with Gothic culture which is reflected in the town’s quirky streets, shops and Abbey ruins, together with of course the annual celebration of the culture - The Whitby Goth Weekend. When you visit you can explore ornate cobbled paths, locally-owned shops and quirky cafes that give Whitby it's intriguing yet welcoming atmosphere, making it a great place to visit. Being by the sea you’ll also get to enjoy classic seaside fun and food with locally caught crab & lobster as well as walks along the pier. Whitby is also a place for explorers, with connection to the famous voyager Captain James Cook. The great man is immortalised in a monument up on West Cliff, where he can be seen looking out to his favourite place – the sea. You can also learn more about his life and journeys in Whitby at the Captain Cook Memorial Museum.

Goathland

Nestled in the North York Moors, the beautiful moorland village of Goathland has been attracting visitors since the 19th century, but numbers have soared following it's appearance as 'Aidensfield' in the television series 'Heartbeat' and also its role in the 'Harry Potter' films. Goathland enjoyed brief popularity as a spa centre during the 19th century, with the railway bringing visitors keen to enjoy the healthy waters.

Thirsk

Welcome to Herriot country. As well as being a traditional Yorkshire market town, Thirsk was also the home of renowned vet, James Herriot. Boasting the spectacular backdrops of the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors, it's no wonder this much-loved author was so inspired living and working here. With it's cobbled market place charm, vintage old-style cinema, great shops and restaurants, this small market town has managed to preserve its original centre and its history.
